missing person, police wont help. WHY?

October 28th, 2009 | by admin |

my friend’s uncle and his 2 children immigrated to the U.S. about a month ago. They’ve been living with my friend’s family. Three days ago, the uncle wandered out into the streets. Clueless as he was, he didnt even bring money or a phone. He still did not come back.
My friend called the police after 24hours. (this is newyork) and the police told her mom "its your brother, you’re suppose to go look for him" and then my friend called the police today. The police told her "technically, hes not even missing."
Are the police allowed to do that??? How can my friend get more help?? I dont think hiring a private investigator is an option.
As of now, they’re just waiting around until he comes home.

I feel really bad because i cannot do anything to help her, and she has to deal with strangers(even tho they’re her family) living in her house. And now, this crap. Her uncle’s kids are orphans. The mom left them. And now the father is missing. Everyone is just really frustrated.

they are not "technically" missing yet cuz it hasn’t been 48 hours since you made the missing persons report. its a very sad situation your in, but its the law. the police honestly can’t do anything about it. you should have reported it a long time ago. why didn’t you?

i’d go down to the station and speak to someone in the missing person’s department. if they shew you away, contact the local news by phone. usually if the news gets involved the police miraculously are able to help you. i’m so sorry you have to go through this.

i wish you the best of luck with finding them. hopefully they are safe at a shelter somewhere just waiting for you to find them. maybe if you contact the news with photos of them someone will recognize them and call the police. Good luck!!

If I were you I would contact your local news about this situation. It almost sounds as if they do not care at all. For one thing this is also part of a police officers job, to help locate a missing person. If they will not or cannot do their job they need to get into another line of work. I hope your friend will find their uncle soon and I wish you and your friend the best of luck in this situation.

Why? Because when there is no indication of foul play or incapacity (elderly, Alzheimer’s, reduced mental ability), the police are reluctant to get involved in the case of a missing adult because in the majority of those cases, the individual skipped out voluntarily. (That the mother also abandoned the children doesn’t help your case.).
